How can we make the workplace more inclusive for bisexual women and men?
Women@WorkplacePride and Elsevier Pride Netherlands invite all Workplace Pride members and friends, men and women, straight/gay/lesbian allies, to listen, talk and think about this topic on Wednesday, April 19th, at the Elsevier Head office in Amsterdam, from 17:00 – 20:00h..
This event will be held in English.
Skylar O’Rourke, a research student of Dr. Jojanneke van der Toorn, the Workplace Pride Chair at Leiden University, will lead the workshop (click here to check out her article in Workplace Pride’s New Horizons 2016 magazine).
The workshop “Bisexuality in the Workplace” evaluates the current climate on bisexual awareness, workplace inclusion, and the efficacy of training techniques. It is based on research done with the Workplace Pride foundation, which found that while there was marginal correlation between workplace regulations and bisexual inclusivity, there was a major correlation with manager and colleagues’ attitudes and biphobic attitudes. Because of this, the workshop was introduced as a method to combat negative stereotypes and to provide an open platform for discussion.
The workshop discusses issues of biphobia, bisexual erasure and micro-aggression in order to address general concerns for bisexuals. It then discusses the results from previous work in terms of HR and LGBT Employee Networks’ opinions on biphobia versus official regulations in place. It then addresses bisexual employees’ opinions of their workplace and colleagues’ attitudes towards their bisexuality. From this comes a discussion of avoidant behaviors resulting from negative treatment, and the measures fellow employees and managers can adopt in order to support bisexual employees.
17:00 – 17:30 Walk-in
17:30 – 18:30 Presentation and discussion
18:30 – 20:00 Networking drinks
At the start and end of the workshop, you will be asked to fill in a short anonymous survey that will inform the research on bisexuality in the workplace.
